Bernstein’s Mass – Southbank Centre

A little performed work brought to life for Bernstein's centenary

As part of the celebrations for the centenary of Bernstein’s birth, Southbank Centre staged his Mass at the Royal Festival Hall in April 2018. Suzi auditioned, directed and trained the choruses and treble soloists for this work, preparing them for the performances.   Conducted by Marin Alsop and directed by Southbank Centre’s then Artistic Director, Jude Kelly, performances brought the excitement of theatre to a little-performed work.

✭✭✭✭ ‘Leonard Bernstein, born 100 years ago, would have loved the big energies and emotions harnessed by this show.’

✭✭✭✭ ‘The Celebrant’s three acolytes – trebles Maia Greaves, Leo Jemison and Freddie Jemison – tugged heartstrings throughout and especially in their ‘Lauda, laude’ music towards the end; and the many choirs covered every aspect of diversity and sang out with infectious conviction.'
